real time or batch is not defined by SAP PI but by the Source or target Application systems.
Ex:
Real Time: Source system sends a synchronous call and expects a response immediately
Batch: Sending collected IDocs to a target ECC system

Hi Sanjai,
Realtime processing is where you receive and process messages as it is received. Source system sends the messages ( eg IDoc) as soon as it is created.
Batch processing means that the message is sent at a certain point of time to PI and not trigerred immediately.
Though from SAP PI perspective, messages processing is always real time as the messages are not stopped in PI (except in case of BPM).
Hope this is useful.
Regards,
Sanjeev.
