Weight unit of measure, and L x W x H, for different countries

To you golbal companies out there,

We are adding some of our sister companies on to SAP. For the first time, we are adding locations outside the USA. We have found that they use the same material number, but the US may use LBS and FT3 for a unit of measure, however Europe may use KG and M3 for units of measure. Is there an effective way of handling this in SAP? Currently SAP only allows you to use one set of; units of measure.

Other ideas we have been exploring.

1.) SAP recommended using material groups because they have their own unit of measure.

2.) Is it possible to use alternate units of measure?

Any suggestions, would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Mark

Exact for this reason SAP has the alternative units of measure.

the only restiction is, that you can only have one base unit of measure worldwide.

So you have to decide if your base unit becomes metric (most countries in the world use metric system) or you stay with the american units.

My first project was in USA for a global player, and there it was decided to use metric base units, and it worked.

It was a tough time in the begining for the americans, especially in production and warehouses, but after a few weeks everybody got used to it.

Paperwork is a extra story, as it is always customized to be company specific, so there is in general no problem to print a bill of lading with both units.
