SP Query

Support packages (not stacks) and Notes both contain corrections. What is the difference between them? Can we say note is for one more couple of problems..and SP is for all corrections identified for a particular support package until date (must include all notes).

When is it appropriate to add a new support package "stack" to our system ? As soon as it arrives ?

When is it appropriate to add a EHP to our system ? Is it a functional team's call ?

Hi,

As per my understanding:

- Notes are corrections for a specific issue. Ofcourse there can be cumalative notes but in that case, the issue to be addressed would bigger. Support package is 'ideally' nothing but a collection of notes for a particular period. The size of the support package and the periodicity depends on how stable a product is. For example a new dimension product like Netweaver 7.3 will have bigger and more support packages as compared to say for SCM 4.0.

However now as per new decisions - there could be new developments in SP as well. Hence the best way to find out what the SP actually contains is to read its Release Information Note.

- Applying a support package as soon as it arrives is not necessary, although it is recommended. The reason being - applying SP to a productive environment needs a lot of planning and modification adjustments as well. Updating to higher SP would be required in case like preparing for upgrade/migrations/unicode conversion etc or else the system is on a far too lower SP level.

- EHP as the name suggest enhances the functionality of a particual product release. And as you rightly guessed the enhance functionality requirement needs to be inline with the business requirement. The functional team decides if the functionality is required. Only then the EhP is brought into the system.

Hope it helps.

Srikishan
