The number of characteristics required in APO demand planning, will depend up on the business requirements. The client need to do forecasting and planning at different levels will decide this.
As an example product, location these are like minimum ones normally required.
Apart from product, location, normally some common characteristics used are like customer, Region, Country, Product group (or Brand, pack, form, category etc).
Some of the above product or customer attributes can be modeled as Navigational Attributes, instead of characteristics.
In a project, consultants model characteristics which will be really useful for the business.
