In commercial, organizational, and technical terms, a client is a self-contained unit in an SAP system with separate master records and its own set of tables.

One of the most basic concepts in SAP is that of "Client". A client is defined as a legally and organizationally independent unit within SAP R/3. For purposes of SAP R/3, a client can be company, corporation or even a business unit. One of the first things SAP asks for at the time of login is the client number. SAP R/3 comes inbuilt with three standard clients viz. 000, 001 and 066

A client is simply the first field of every data record in tables that are not overall system-related. It is a way to have different groupings of data within one database. Originally multiple companies ran SAP from one system and database in a time sharing fashion. The 'client' was the company they were doing business with. They added more companies and they became more clients in the system. The design created to separate one company's information from another a dded a 'client' or mandt field to each client-related data table. Behind the scenes any data access additionally specifies the client number that the user logged into.

Using the MARA table (general material data) as an example, the first data field is mandt followed by material number and other material fields. If you logged into client 300 and in an ABAP program did a database query like select * from mara SAP in the backgreound is actually querying the database as select * from mara where mandt = 300.

Clients can be used for separating data for multiple companies or multiple divisions or just created for testing a process or dataload. Clients can be created, copied and deleted.

Hi Anushka

I think you are missing this concept. The Client is not an organizational unit like company and company code. A client is a part of the Landscape. As you must be aware about the development ,quality and production servers in the landscape. these are called clients.when u enter SAP the first thing asked to you is client number. This number will decide u are entering in which system.Suppose u are implementing for Tata Power, then the landscape will have clients or systems for Development ,Quality and Production for this implementation.

If a company code and other org units are compared to planets in the universe, the client is a seperate universe in itself. Its an environment.

the confusion in terminology arises when Tata Power where u are implementing the project is called as Client in general conversation since its a Business Client for your company. In SAP language Client refers to an environment not a company.

Hi,

000: SAP standard client

This client is used to set up new "neutral" clients by client copy. Do not change or delete this client.

This is an SAP referce client

Every time an SAP system is installed the 000 client is created by default woth 2 users SAP* and DDIC. Transport configurations are always done from 000 client. (they can t be done in any other client and they have to be done with the user DDIC).

Other client like Customizing client, testing client etc are created form the 000 client. Similarly in the production environment also the productive environment client is copied from 000.

001: SAP standard client

This client is used to set up new "neutral " clients by client copy.

This is also an SAP reference client. No changes should be done in this client either

Do not change or delete client

A Company is the unit to which your financial statements are created and can have one to many company codes assigned to it. A company is equivalent to your legal business organization. Consolidated financial statements are based on the companys financial statements. Companies are defined in configuration and assigned to company codes. Each company code must use the same COA (Chart of Accounts) and Fiscal Year. Also note that local currency for the company can be different.

Company Codes are the smallest unit within your organizational structure and is used for internal and external reporting purposes. Company Codes are not optional within SAP and are required to be defined. Financial transactions are viewed at the company code level. Company Codes can be created for any business organization whether national or international. It is recommended that once a Company Code has been defined in Configuration with all the required settings then other company codes later created should be copied from the existing company code. You can then make changes as needed. This reduces repetitive input of information that does not change from company code to company code as well as eliminate the possibility of missed data input
