Oracle clusterware incompatible with Microsoft Failover Cluster

Hi,

I have installed SAP ERP EHP4/NW7.01 with high availability option using 2-node

Microsoft Fail over Cluster on windows server 2008 environment.

The Oracle version 10g release 2 patch 4 database uses the fail safe software to

fail over to the other node in the same Microsoft failover cluster that SAP instance use.

I want to convert the oracle single instance database to oracle Real Application Cluster.

In this case i will have 2 cluster solutions managing on the same nodes running independently.

But according to this metalink note number 289836.1

Oracle clusterware is currently incompatible with Microsoft Failover cluster.

this is the case of windows 2008 server.

My questions are:

If the cofiguration was possible,

1.Is this be a desirable configurations?

Since the configuration is not possible,

2. What could be the best configuration to enable Oracle RAC for the SAP installation?

Thanks in advance

Hi,

If you want a High Availibility Solution for SAP ERP on Windows/Oracle, you have to use Oracle Fail Safe and not Oracle RAC.

I may be possible to use RAC on a different cluster but I don't think this woluld be officially supported by SAP.

I have a SAP R/3 4.7 production system on MSCS/ Oracle Fail Safe and it works great. I don't feel any need for Oracle RAC.

Hi,

You cannot use MSCS cluster and RAC together. If you check SAP note 581320, then below difference between 2 configuration is mentioned:

7. What is the difference between RAC and conventional MSCS and UNIX clusters in the SAP environment?

MSCS and SAP-UNIX clusters

Shared Nothing Cluster

The Oracle resource has a virtual IP address

Oracle only runs on a maximum of one node at any time.

RAC

Shared Disk Cluster

No virtual IP address for the Oracle resource

Oracle instances can run on several nodes simultaneously.

So, keeping above points in mind, I don't think so your configuration is possible.

Thanks
