Error during upgrade to MAX DB

Former Member

Hi all

I would like to upgrade my MAXDB 7.6 system (which I migrated from 7.4) to 7.8. During the upgrade with sdbinst (I also tried with SDBUPD) I get error messages with empty error message (I have several empty popups with title "error in database upgrade finalization") .

Now my db is in a inconsistent state. When I try to connect to the database I get the error:

DBM connect failed: Could not start DBM server.

-24562,ERR_MIGRATION: Error during migration of data

-24609,ERR_MIGRUNICODE: Migration of a ASCII database is not possible

Now I'm blocked. I even cannot delete the database.

Any idea what I did wrong?

Thanks in advance.

Regards

Marco

Could solve the problem now. After migrating the catalog (see above) I had the error with sdbupd. Then I tried with the graphical interface and it worked!

You have a backup of the database?

Upgrade should always be accomplished by SDBUPD.

Hello Markus

Yes of course. This is a sandbox system. I recovered the database with another SID and retried but still the same error (with sdbupd).

Ok.

So you executed something like

sdbupd -u <dbmuser>,<dbmpassword> -d <database-ID>

and you got popups?

No the popup I got from sdbsetup (with the graphical upgrade). Now I retried with your command I now I think I have to do the unicode migration first....

- bring the database offline

- execute

dbmcli -u <user>,<password> -d <database> db_migratecatalog

Thanks for your reply.

I migrated the catalog with mcli -u <dbadmin> -d SDB db_migratecatalog.

Now I could perform the upgrade and I got the error Install registry file not found: directory .... doesn't exist.

When I retried to install now I get the error "installation path doesn't exist".

And you upgraded again using sdbupd with the above given command?

What is the exact error message?

I could start the upgrade with sdbupd. But the upgrade failed with the error message (shown in Dos-Box):

"Install registry file not found: directory .../install does not exist".

Any idea what could be the problem here?I am on platform Windows Server 2008.

Thanks and Regards

Are you running this command in an elevated administrator cmd.exe?

Windows 2008 has UAC - start the cmd.exe as elevated (http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_vista-windows_programs/need-help-for-this-error-cmdexe-application-failed/44055dc8-d835-45d3-84bf-52df8ccb8e9f) and try the upgrade again.

Hello Markus

Thanks again for your quick response. Yes I did it with the elevated administrator from the beginning. When I retry now I get this error message:

SAP MaxDB Installation Manager - Database Upgrade 7.8.01.14

***********************************************************

ERR: Upgrade failed

ERR: installation path doesn't exist

I think the problem now is that there is already a wrong upgrade installation. I think I have to delete some temporary upgrade files...

Sorry for my questions...I'm a complete MaxDB-newbie coming from Oracle-World. The documentation was a bit confusing.

Hello Markus

Because I thought that it could be a problem of my many tests I formated Windows and reinstalled the complete windows. Then I installed 7.6 made the recovery from 7.3 system. Migrated the catalog and restarted the update. Unfortunately I get the same error:
