Hi,
We have made business area compulsory from 01.04.2011. We have 5 business area. We are using classi gl. The problem we are facing in closing is the old line item does not have Business area and hence the f.18 , balance sheet , is not tallying. How we can mass update the documents & which business area should be selected for such huge number of documents .

Instead of making the mass updates, what i would suggest is draw up a balance sheet manually based on business area, have a dummy business area, post summary transactions per business area debiting and crediting the same GL account with the right business area and the dummy business area as offset.
fOR EXAMPLE
You have a liability account for 100. You should manually determine/know how much of the value falls under different business areas. So if 40 falls under BA 1 and 60 falls under BA 2. Create a dummy area BA 3.
Pass a journal entry
Dr Liability account 100 with BA 3
cr Liability account 40 with BA1
cr Liability account 60 with BA2.
Since you are looking at the balance sheet view only you will not need the P/L accounts. However you will need to post entries per customer/vendor or alternatively create whole new accounts which are not reconcilliaion accounts and post the summary debit and credit into these accounts.
