Hello

I would tend to agree with the statement "sql server 2005 and win 2003 64 bit is as stable as unix with oracle" with the following qualifications:

1. Windows hardware - that is either IA32 and x64 is not engineered to the same level as many Unix vendors hardware and will not be as stable as Unix for purely hardware related reasons. The stability of a Windows 2003 x64 system is largely dependant on the engineering of the server (does the server have ECC memory or much simpler and cheaper "chip kill" protection"). ECC or similar is standard on IBM RS/6000, HP and Sun Unix servers but not so common on DELL servers.

2. Windows will be as good or better than Unix if you run Windows 2003 on Unisys, HP or Fujitsu Itanium IA64 server. These servers are in fact "Unix" servers - the HP Integrity systems can even run HP-UX and Windows 2003 in different partitions (nPars).

3. Change management and administration - this is the largest contribution to the reliability of a Windows system. Some Windows administrators do not have the required discipline and change control procedures that are required to ensure a stable platform for SAP.

In summary - the stability of your SAP system is dependant on the hardware you purchase (the more you spend, the more stable) and on having skilled Windows server administrators. Of the two variables the Windows Server Administrator is most difficult to obtain.
