The table VBFA is the right one for developing a report

Kindly use T-Code VA05N this will be more fruitful

and VF05N this is amazing standard SD reports and you can have query for VBAK TYPE ='C' and then with key to VBRK

You can create your own report in SQVI or using SQ01,SQ02,SQ03. I hope you are familiar with Query reporting. Use tables VBAK,VBRK, and VBap and VBRP for item data. search forum for getting help that how to create report using ABAP Query reporting. Its very easy. Query report will be more reliable and fast as compare to Z report.

If your requirement is to show the sales order + invoice in one report, i think we have to go for a Z report with

VBFA (the sales order being your preceding document and invoice will be the subsequent document,considering the subsequent document type as invoice )
