CPU utilization is very high

Hi All,

Our production server CPU utilization seems to be very high. The number of available physical CPUs is 6 and the utilization seems to be around 4.8 on an average during business hours. It even seems to reach 5.99 sometimes.

Can you please suggest if there is something that can be done from sap end or AIX environment

Thanks,

Raju

Hi...

The question that you are asking is very generic & serious issue, because it directly effect the performance of the system, there may be so many issues related to this it can analyze, why CPU utilization increased. some of them you can check

1) CPU utilization increased either by OS or SAP level.

2) if it is related to OS level

a) have you done any patch up-gradation or older patch level of OS

b) Check for new firm ware for Hardware level.

c) either Kernal parameter changed

d) check your files systems.

e) Any NFS file system is mounted, then check for availability.

f) check your SAN Storage if there is.

3) if CPU utilization related to SAP & DB

a) check your database parameters.

b) database growth

c) check table space utilization (%).

d) check table space extend block size.

e) check segment management extend block size.

f) check hit & miss ratio

g) check excessive background jobs, if scheduled if any(SM37) .

h) check process status from SM66.

Cheers

The higher the number of total CPUs the higher the average CPU utilization can be without implying a CPU bottleneck. So with 6 CPUs an average CPU utilization of 80% sounds a little too high, but as long as the CPU peaks of 100% have only a short duration, then there would be no real problem. Check your wait times in ST03, if they are low then there seems to be no performance problem. If you deem your wait times in ST03 too high, then please post more details (as suggested by Markus).

Which processes are consuming that much time?

It may just be that your system is not sized enough for the workload.
