I was little confused over the use of reference customer. Can anyone plz tell me the use of reference customer.

Hello

It is part of workflow & must be there before you can execute the BAPI_CUSTOMER_CREATEFROMDATA.

You can use Tcode V-09 to create Reference customer

If you would like to extend the Sales Area of an existing Customer which is created in different Sales Area then you would have to use Reference Customer.

Mention the same Customer Code & put the Sales Area in which you would have to extend it. In ref. , put the Sales Area where Customer is already created.
