I have a client with Crystal Reports 2008 and I have Crystal Reports 2011. Will the client be able to open a report with CR2008 that was written in CR2011?

hi,

You can use "Upgrade Management Tool" in BO XI 4.0 to import CR 2011 report from one CMS to other CMS.

Source: BO XI 4.0 system

Destination: BO XI 3.1 system

After import process is complete,

you can probably verify if it is supported or not.

As Jason said, if you have used new features of 2011 in the report, obviously you can't make use of them in 2008.

Generally, Forward compatibility is supported instead of Backward compatibility.

Possibly.

We do not support running newer reports in older versions of the product.

That being said it may work as long as you do not use any of the new features in the newer product when designing the report.

The only way to see if it works for you is to try it.

Just to clarify, we do support all versions of Crystal Reports designed in any version of CR and used in any other version of CR. CR 8.5 cannot open CR 9 and above reports though due to format changes in the RPT file, UNICODE support was introduced in CR 9.

However, we do HIGHLY recommend that you update your reports to the current version so there are no update issues and they work as designed. There can be changes in the DB clients, linking, Join types and field type definitions that can change by those providers and are out of our control which can cause minor problems. Typically Verifying the Database resolves the problem. More so when moving from an older version to current versions and from legacy CR 8.5 or lower to current releases of CR Designer.

The only differences between CR 2008 and CR 2011 is support for XLXS and ACCDB is now supported in CR 2011 which CR 2008 does not support. And CR 2011 has the ability to export to RPTR ( locked rpt file ) which CR 2008 won't be able to open.

As for BOE 4.0 wizards that really has nothing to do with your info in this case.

The message you or they will see when opening or saving a report is a generic one and pop's up when the version difference is detected in the RPT file and the version of the Designer are different.

So as long as you stay away from the noted Enhancements and features in CR 2011 your CR 2008 users should not have any problems. If they do let us know and we can escalate the issue to our Developers to resolve.

Also, Ask your users to update to CR 2008 SP 3 and Fix Pack 3.5 also so you/they are supported using the Native 10 MS SQL Server DB client, if that is one of the supported DB's by you/them.

Thank you
