Prototyping is simply setting up an example of what you want to do. Prototyping is often done in the sandbox system and is used to demonstrate the capabiliy of a process to meet the requirements of the end user. In large projects, the sandbox is used by the consultants for designing and testing various options and then for the project they build a separate test system or prototype system with all the "future" config. Usuallly only a very small amount of master data is set up for demos and testing.
Users can then make comments on how it works, what they want changed, where the defficencies are. Usually not a lot of custom development is available at this point. The prototype box may eventually become a testing client as development is completed and moved over from a development box. It may also be used an intitial test box for loading legacy data. Eventually the box is usually taken down and used for something else at some point in the project. Every project is differenet due to a company's availability of systems, licensces, and hardware. Your project managment should provide you info on where and when you do your prototyping.

Hi,
Just to add to the points mentioned above:
Prototyping in SAP Implementation is:
Mapping the business processes of the customer to "show" how it works.
By this, the customer gets a "feel" of the system with "his" materials & processes.
However, as mentioned above, minimum customization, master data are used in this purpose.
This way, the concept is sold to the customers so that, it convinces them of SAP's Integration, Robustness & Audit trail of the system.

Krishna
