Hi All,
We are in process to upgrade the kernel on our QAS and PRD systems (ECC 6.0).
Both the systems are on clusters. (Active)
Need help to know the process to upgrade the kernel on both the servers.
Please share your experience with me to finish my work.
Please share If is there any document from SAP.
Hi,
There is no difference in apply a kernel patch to an SAP system running on Microsoft Cluster on Windows compared to an SAP system running in a distributed (or non-distributed) Windows environment.
Basic steps being: (for a 64-bit x64 system, ntamd64 directory may be different depending on your environment)
- You download the required patches (SAPEXE, SAPEXEDB or dw* etc. as per SAP Note#19466)
- Stop SAP using your normal process
i.e. Stop all of your instancesfor that SAP system; i.e. your application instance, central instance & central services
For NW 7.0, SAP MMC is integrated with Microsott cluster so this can be used to stop & start the systems.
- Backup the existing SYS\exe\uc|nuc\ntamd64 directory
- Extract the SAPEXE & SAPEXEDB (dw* etc) files to the ntadm64 directory.
- Restart the SAP system using your normal process.
As part of SAP startup, sapcpe is executed to copy the kernal files from the SYS\exe\uc|nuc\ntamd64 directory to the local instance directories (central services, application servers).
- Checks
There is however (sometimes) a problem with corruption of sapstartsrv.exe in a cluster environment - please read SAP Note#1345206 for more information. I have seen this issue occasionaly occur but it is random.
Thanks.

I have already applied kernel upgrade on ECC last week.
This time the Server is on Microsoft cluster and we need to know the procedure to take the cluster offline and which files backup need to be taken on behalf of cluster, and what is the use of NTCLUSTER (NTCLUS.SAR) file.
is there any 1 who has upgraded the kernel on Clusters.
Please provide any document updated by SAP.
Thanks in Advance.

I know the procedure to download kernel and do the upgrades on the ECC server.
Here i am looking the steps or the document to upload the kernel on the Server which is on Cluster.
What would be the procedure to stop the server and the complete steps.

HI Govind,
In addition to the steps outlined in 19466, the standard procedure will be:
1. Bring down system and database. (stopsap)
2. Kill any processes that did not die.
3. Cleanipc
4. Tar up entire /sapmnt/<SID>/exe directory for possible need to revert
back to kernel.
5. Copy tar file to safelocation
6. SAPCAR the kernel SAR files in the EXE Directory.
8. and FINALLY, start the SAP system (startsap)
Regards,
Shimon
Dear Govind,
For ECC 6.0 the only kernel version released is 700.
I would suggest you to install the newest kernel 700 libraries (SAPEXE and
SAEXEDB) on your system as per Note 19466. You will also find the
instructions in that note, especiall in the "Copying and installing a patch"
section.
Best regards,
Shimon Zafrir
