Business Views against SAP ECC and BW

Does anyone know if Business Views are supported and/or recommended against SAP ECC and BW data sources? I've never heard of them being used successfully in either environment. If anyone has used BVs in either environment, how does it handle things like SAP authorizations, BW variables, and a hierarchies?

That's what I thought, too. I'm asking the question because I'm working with a client and the SAP consultants on the project are recommending they use Business Views to generate pick lists for reports running against SAP BW queries. I've never heard of doing this and am wondering why they are recommending this as a best practice.
