I'd be amazed if something as old as 8.5 would work with java 1.6, so that would be my starting point

I tried with Java 1.4, I am getting the same error.

Since the error is:

network: Connecting http://xxxxx.net/Report/rptserver.asp?viewer=java&vfmt=encp&vgen=414&language=en

what error message do you get when you try connecting to that URL in the browser outside of the Java Applet?

It ask me the the question. Do you want to open the file or save the file.

rptserver.asp

So that means you've deployed that ASP file to a web app server not configured to run ASP files.

It is configured to run ASP file. The viewer used is Java Plugin viewer.

<!-- #include file="JavaPluginViewer.asp" -->
