Counter measuring point is similarly like counter e.g: Analog speedometer. By this continues reading can be measurable. Based on the number of digits this counter can be overflow e.g by considering two digits value maximum value is 99 after 99 in counter it will start from 00 and 01 etc...But in ECC counter overflow indication is not available that is the drawback in it, which was fixed in HANA.
But overflow process not available in General measuring point.
General measuring point is for capturing some random value.

A physical or logical place at which a status is described.
Examples
1.Temperature inside a reactor
use of measuring point
ik01 - Create a measuring point for the equipment with the characteristics units in master data.
ik11 - Enter the temperature reading in measuring documents with the measuring point number
2.Running hours for generator
use of measuring point as counter is...
ik01-Create a measuring point and check the check box measuring point as counter for the equipment with the characteristics units in master data.
ik11 - enter the counter reading value..then it displays the difference value between the actual and previous reading, and the total counter reading.
by using the measuring point we can see only measuring reading,
by using the measuring counter we can able to see the total counter reading and difference between the actual and previous reading.
The status is described using measurement readings.
Measuring points are stored in the SAP System as master data
