SAPInst on AS400

Hi,

We have AS400 box located on remote location. We want to use SAPInst standalone to install SAP netweaver product but it is taking long time to install on WAN. We dont have local PC on LAN for installation.

We are planning to use windows server installed on AS400. And accessing server using windows client to run SAPInst.

Just wanted to check feasibility of such solution and what’s the experience using such solution? Any major issues.?

Regards,

Milan

Hi Milan,

yes, you DEFINETELY need a windows server locally - otherwise it will take "for ever".

And good news for you:

The built in Windows Server in the iSeries is as good (a bit better) as every other Windows Server in the local network. I used this a few times in the past

Hi Volker,

Thank you for the reply we are going with the solution. We are looking for multiple users to connect to the server in that case do we have to have windows terminal server edition or simple windows server will also work to connect multiple users at a time?

Hi Milan,

WTS is only needed if you want to share the SAPGUI centrally. If you install the SAPGUI at every PC, the user would logon to the iSeries without any windows servers in a 2-tier environment. (90%+ of all installations)

If you run 3-tier with windows appl servers, you need a good windows server, but not WTS.

Only if you want to run the SAPGUI on ONE windows server, then you would need WTS.

Hi Volker,

We are looking at option in which, multiple admin users can log on to win server concurrently from remote locations and do admin tasks, like SAPInst for installation, SAP J2EE server or running IBM iSeries Navigator for windows. In this case they will be sharing application like SAPInst or J2EE visula admin etc. Is it possible to have win server on AS400 box and create user accounts on the AS400 so that using remote desktop connection, remote logins can happen to do the above mention activity. Or it will be only possible on Windows Terminal Edition of server.

Hi Milan,

if you really need several parallel people for admin tasks - which I doubt a bit long term ...

then you need WTS :-((
