Hi,
For each material safety stock is updated in the material master MRP2 view. It is not calculated quantity. Based on the material's importance and frequent requirement to delivery to customer if it is finished product or production if it is raw material, business key some level of stock ready for production or sales.

Sreenivasa,
Perhaps your instructor was referring to Dynamic Safety stock, which is provided by SAP in ERP.

Hi Sreenivasa,
Safety stock is usually determined by business, however APO is alos having funtionallity to calculate the satefy stock automatically using Extended Safety Stock Planning.
Please refer the below link for Extended Safety Stock Planning.

If you are using APO, SNP has limited functionality for Salfety Stock calculation. For more advanced safety stock calculations ('safety stock optimization'), you need to used a third party tool from vendors such as SmartOps, ToolsGroup, Otiant, etc and integrate it with ECC or APO.

You can not automatically calculate safety stock in SAP. Safety stock is usually calculated by business and entered into SAP. You can use below link to get more information in safety stock
