Would it be possibl to use a Stand-By server or reporting instance (database server only) as the TDMS source?

Create a new SAP instance (may be in the existing box) and attached the Database instance that you mentioned and then this may be used as a source system.
This is my understnading of your query : you want to use one of the DB instances as source for TDMS .
How this instance is coupled with your Sender system?
How the application data integration with this instance is configured ?
