I checked this in my system and got the exact error when i missed out a particular step. After selecting the fieldfor which you want to make a mass change , you must have pressed the select changes button directly. This is not correct - on the top right (above the make change and other icons) you will have an input list. You have to maintain the new value here and then press select changes.
for example if you want to change the lot size for 100 materials to say 250 , then you have to select the 100 materials (top left ) and then select the lot size field (bottom left - components and attributes to be maintained tab) - click on execute. In the screen that shows up on the right in the lot size field give the value 250 and then press select changes an click on save .
