Kernel Upgrade

Hi ,

We are using SAP 4.7 with WAS 620.The current kernel level is 1984 and planning to go for a kernel upgrade to level 2225.

We have three systems in landscape :DEV, QAS and PRD.

I am sure about how to perform kernel upgrade. But the question is that can we do the kernel upgrade on these three systems on different dates with a gap of 2 days.

Or it is it mandatory that kernel upgrade should be done on all systems in the landscape at the same time?

Also what are the important post kernel upgrade checks to be performed in the system?

Regards,

Sri

Hi Srini:

It's not mandatory and theres no problem in leaving some time in between updates... Actually theres no problem at all in having different patch levels in your different systems (As long as you have a reason to do that), Just make sure that all the servers withing a specific system have the same patch level

Hope this help!

Hi Sri,

There's no real post kernel steps... kernel is the core of the system and consist in two parts, one that is related to the database and one that is independent of the database.

Once you download the right kernel extract all files into a new directory, copy the new directory to <drive>:\usr\sap\<sid>\sys\exe\ (kernel is located in the "run" directory, stop the system and rename old kernel directory example: run_old (so if you have problems with the new kernel you can easely go back to the old one) then rename the new kernel as "run" and start the system.

If the system start properly no further checks are necesary.

Thats basically it!

Hope this help.

Hi Sri,

Improvements are very diverse... basically the kernels bring corrections to the way that the system handle the data, memory or simply updates to make the products compatible.

Hope this help!

Hi Juan,

Thanks for the valuable info.

I need one more information:

Whats SAP's strategy for kernel upgrade/applying the latest patches?

I think SAP comes in every quartet with the latest kernel patches.

Can we folllow the process of Kernel updates as and when SAP comes with the latest patches? What are its implication?

Regards,

Sri

As a post kernel upgrade activity you can run SGEN which will generate programs .. else your users will be seeing delays in accessing the transactions etc

thanks

Hello Srini,

When you go to marketplace to download the latest kernel patch set, there is a link on the same row called "Info".

That link has a description of what the kernel patch set is trying to fix or enhance when compared to the previous patch set.

Hope that helps.
