Hi SAPers,
I am fairly new to SAP Basis and would like to understand a bit more about the concept of client. Say we have a 3 system landscape. We perform some development on the development system.
Q1. Which client should / is the development suppose to take place?
Q2. What will be the number of the other clients on this system? Is the developed piece of code applicable to all these other clients? If not how can that be made available?
Q3. How do we promote/transport these developments to the other systems?
Q4. Is this promoted piece of code available to all the clients on the recepient system?
A simple basic answer to these questions will suffice. If there is a link to a good diagram on the topic, that will be highly appreciated.
Thanks in advance for sharing the wealth of your knowledge.

Hi,
transaction SCC4 will give you your current client on your system.
A1 : development client should have this following setting (on SCC4)
- client role : customizing
- changes and transport for client-specific object : automatic recording of changes
- cross-client changed objects : changes to repository and cross client customizing allowed
- client copier : no restriction
not that only one client (on SCC4) who have setting like above.
A2 : Client number is specified when you copy an existing client or create a new one via SCC4. you can use any number 3 digits other than 000, 001 or 066. You can have many client within a system (says DEV), since client (mandt) itself only differentiate table records on table level.
A3 : Using tcode STMS. You have to configure this on client 000, specify the route and distribute it accross the system involved.
A4 : Yes.
may this link help you (taken from SAP documentation)
