XML stands for extensible markup language. In SRM, all output documents are sent in XML format which can be understood by any system. This gives you quite flexibility compared to EDI Idoc output medium used in R/3 backend.
How it is enabled in SRM?
To enable use of XML or PI/XI in your srm system,
Use TCode SPRO.
SAP Implementation Guide -> SAP Supplier Relationship Management -> SRM Server -> Cross Application Basic settings -> Enable use of Exchange Infrastructure -> click the check box 'Use Application Integration Checkbox'.
Using above way, you can enable use of XI/PI both in ECS and standalone mode.
By Activating PI/XI above way, you are only opting for use of XML communication for B2B (business to business) communication like purchase order sent to supplier or system communication for example SRM server and SUS (Supplier Self Service system). Sometimes, it needs further settings or configuration say example for communication between SRM server and SUS system., you need to define logical system for SRM, SUS and RFC destination from both sides. You can follow the SAP standard configuration guides for enabling such communication.
