SAPDB 7.5 kernel from NW04 dies with signal 11 when started on Suse 10.1

I just installed a Open Suse 10.1 and tried to install the SAP Netweaver 04 Testdrive SR1 (September 2004). However the datebase kernel does not come up. Kernel dies - regarding the knldiag file -on a signal 11:

Hello Detlef,

since you are installing SAP Netweaver 04, it looks like you're an SAP customer. In that case, please open a CSS ticket and attach the knldiag file to it.

actually I have doubts that such ticket will be accepted because Suse 10.1 is not a certified platform and the testdrive was no regular product. The query here was intended that even in this case somebody hints as this problem seems to be quite elementary (MaxDB 7.5 on Suse 10.1). That platform had also problems running products which came packaged with InstallAnywhere as inside the sh-archive LD_ASSUME_KERNEL was used (here this is not the case).

-> What outputs you will get when you will run the following commands on

the database server:

-> Please update with the 'Symbolic Stack Back Trace' from the knldiag or knldiag.err files

( As the database was crashed in 15sec after you tried to restart. Please copy complete knldiag file. )

-> What is the value of the database parameter 'USE_COROUTINES'?

As you know, you must use hardware that is certified by your hardware vendor

for use with SAP on Linux.

Sorry, I have no idea how to get the USE_COROUTINES parameter. However I checked the installation with Suse 9.2, where it was working, unless I switched of the LD_ASSUME_KERNEL environment variable which was set to 2.4.1 in 9.2 installation. (See http://people.redhat.com/drepper/assumekernel.html for an explaination) If the LD_ASSUME_KERNEL is unset the same error occurs.

However that option is not working on Suse 10.1: if it is set any binary fails with an error message like 

"error while loading shared libraries: libdl.so.2: cannot open shared object”

That is because of a general change in glibc (see

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=144935[https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=144935 | https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=144935]http://people.redhat.com/drepper/assumekernel.html). So it looks as if sapdb 7.5 uses old thread model which is not supported in Suse 10.1 anymore. Does that parameter USE_COROUTINES influence that model?

You failed with the command 'Sdbuninst -l' => you need to run

'sdbuninst -l' to get the output.

1)Please let me know, if you could start the database after you will

set the database parameter 'USE_COROUTINES' to 'YES'.

What is the value of the database parameter USE_STACK_ON_STACK ?

2)What is output of the 'getconf GNU_LIBPTHREAD_VERSION' command on the

database server?

Hi Natalia,

hmm, I haven't received any answer on my question. Actually I'm quite frustrated, as even the update to the most recent PL 7.5..35 failed as it did not solve the problem. In the moment I'm a bit stumped and have no idea what else I can do.

The old 9.2 version I can't get alive as the license renewal process seems to be broken due to a failure in mailer system

Hi Detlef,

sorry for that, due to an internal mixup another Detlef Werner got the information meant for you.

Ok, now to your issue.

Our 32bit MaxDB 7.5 versions are created on systems which have SLES 8, because of compatibility.

These versions <b>will</b> work on SLES 9 (see mentioned note 788272) aswell, but they won't work on your SUSE 10.1 anymore, because there's no old Linuxthreads support in that version anymore, as you yourself already found out.

So, in short, <b>you cannot use a 32bit MaxDB 7.5 version on SUSE 10.1</b>.

MaxDB version 7.6 should work on it, though, as that version is created on a SLES9 environment.

So if you'd find a NW Preview version with a MaxDB 7.6 below it, you should be good to go.

Is it an option to migrate just the database to MaxDB 7.6 or does all the clients (i.e. all the SAP kernel programs) also be migrated to 7.6 versions?

Please review the SAP note 887766.

Please pay attention to

If this software is no longer available, the new version must be

installed with SDBINST. Please note that this is only possible for a

You failed with upgrade from to 7.5 Build 35, you run the

'/sapdb/programs/bin/sdbregview -instancedata' & check, if it

shows, that instance data left by unfinished instance update :

( You could run 'sdbregview -h' to see the options of the tool

'sdbregview'. )

To resolve this problem, you could:

->To clean the upgrade, as it is not officially completed yet, you will have to issue the following steps:

I need to go to the directory where you extracted version 7.5.00.35 first.

Install the Kernel package of the version 7.5.00.35 with the next command,

run it as root:

./SDBINST -package "Database Kernel"

->With 'sdbregview -instancedata' you should get after that 'no instance

data found'.

->After that run the upgrade with SDBUPD of the version 7.6 build 28 one more time.

Hi Natali,

thanks for the reply. No, I'm not aware of a newer NW Preview for Linux based on MaxDB 7.6.

Due to time constraints I had already used the brute force approach: I de-installed the testdrive and reinstalled it from scatch. When the installation failed at the data base activation phase I directly upgraded to 7.6. Afterwards I successfully finished the installation (Almost, as I had to edit the install.sh script and remove the LD_ASSUME_KERNEL line as it prevents all further system commands for user nw4adm).

After finalizing NW4 installation is the SAP system was up and running on Suse 10.1.

That's the good news. The bad news is that since 6 days I'm still waiting on a requested license. Without I hardly can use the freshy installed version.
