R/3 To XI

We are going to connect our R/3 system to XI to send an IDOC to our Vendor ( IDOC to XI to Vendor(cXML)).

How is the connection should be established between R/3 and XI?

What are all the Security points that needs to be in place while connecting R/3 and XI?
