Dear All,
My scenario:
1) R/3(ECC) - - - PI(7.1) - - - MDM(7.1)
2) Portal(EP) - - - PI(7.1) - - - MDM(7.1)
If the above two scenarios were able to connect the corresponding servers directly then why do we need PI in between to connect those.
Could anyone give some justifications for the above stated query.
Thanks in Advance,
Lavanya.B
why do we need PI in between to connect those.
same as it is for other scenarios....message conversion/ monitoring etc etc

Apart from the above listed features, PI plays a key role when you want to have the data sending across from ECC to MDM to be in different format and to make use of BPM (Business Process Management) to implement any logic and proces the messages.

Hi Lavanya,
It is basically used for Monitoring the data flow. Please go through this link for the message flow in MDM from PI for both sender and receiver : http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nwmdm71/helpdata/en/48/d1bc1b696d230ee10000000a42189b/frameset.htm.
Hope this answers your question.

If possible to connect directly, do not use PI. Never use PI in a portal scenario.
