Two questions for you:

1) What do you think is the difference between Offline and Online Backups for MaxDB? Why do you think you would ever need such a thing as a Offline backup?

2) Why aren't you able to use the documentation?

Dear Lars,

I am new to maxdb I am a Oracle DBA.

My question is like in oracle we are having online backup using RMAN and for offline backup we have to backup the data files, redo log files,Control file and pfile or spfile .

Like that i want to know which files are required to backup up for the offline backup of maxdb.

Ok, this is a new database - you need to aquire new knowledge then!

For MaxDB you are not going to backup single files. You just take a complete database backup (online) and this will contain all information required to recreate the instance. Regardless whether you take the backup online or offline, you can always use it to start and open the database (this is much better then with Oracle user managed backup).

You may want to check my blog series "mind the gap" for that. Just search with this term here on SDN for blogs and you'll find them.

For the specific topic you want to read ['Mind the gap...' (#3 - Backup/Restore - Part 1)|http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/scn/weblogs?blog=/pub/wlg/10093] [original link is broken] [original link is broken] [original link is broken];.

Besides that, the already mentioned training content and the expert sessions available at http://maxdb.sap.com/training are a must-read for you!

Ok - given the rules of engagement here in SDN you should have done your homework before posting such a general question. Since christmas has just past, take this as a present for you and have a good start with MaxDB in 2011.

Lars
