Difference between Web Dynpro application & R\3 application

Hi Experts,

I m new to SAP.Could anyone plz briefly explain me what is the difference between a Web Dynpro application & R\3 application ? when r\3 application is preferred & when Web Dynpro ?

SAP R/3 is SAP's integrated software solution for client/server and distributed open systems. R/3 uses the ABAP/4 programming language and allows for the possibility of several computers of differing manufacturers to conjoin into one solid working database, operating in the open system or client/server environments.

Webdynpro is SAPu2019s technology for developing professional user interfaces for ABAP and JAVA business application and this is also an elementary component of the SAP NetWeaver technolog.
