Enhancement Pack Strategy

hi,

We have been applying support packs/stacks every 6 months once. The exercise starts from sandbox and at the end of 6 month, it would be in production. As Enhancement packs are introduced and there are Ehp1 / 2 etc, wondering, if any structured support pack strategy could be followed. Any of your experience would be help.

This is not about how to apply Enhancement packs.. I am looking for overall strategy from management point of view in keeping systems up to date.

Thanks,

Raj S

Hi Raj,

You are on the right track - It is a good practice that you are upgrading every 6 months. This way, you will not miss any fixes.

Basically the EHPs contain new features - They are feature Packs.

SPs released on top of EHPs are mainly for bug fixes - They seldom contain new features.

If you require a bugfix which is available in a latest SP, then you can perform an SP upgrade.

If you are looking for new features, then an EHP upgrade would be advised.

Thanks! . So, this means, if any new features are added, then next Ehp(n) would be released by SAP?

All SPS level within one Ehp ( say Ehp1) would be for bug fixing only.

We have upgraded BW / CRM / Solman to Enhancement packs.Based on your reply, it looks to me, same 6 months strategy is good, until we opt for next level of Enhancement pack.

Thanks,

Hi Raj,

Yes thats correct- For new features, you can upgrade to the next EHP.

SPs in an EHP will only contain bug fixes- very rarely there are exceptions

Like a customer requires a feature very urgently, but cannot wait until the next EHP is released...In this case it would be added into the next SP. But again, this is not a standard practice and is very rare.

The procedure is same but now will be through solution manager (MOPZ)

Under the installation guide there is a link http://service.sap.com/maintenancenw70, and select your correct version. There is a pdf file for each SP Stack Guide. Hope this is what you are looking for.
