HP UX server migration from 11.23 to 11.31

Hi

We are running our NW04s in oracle 10.1.0.2.0 / HP 11.23 IA64 rx8620 server. We are aware that 10.1.0.2.0 is now no longer supported.

Our task is to migration to the new HPUX 11.31 (blade) servers.

Our approach is going to be a homogenous system copy (backup source & restore it in target)

Since we don't have 10.1.0.2.0 software avaible, we will be installing oracle 10.2.0.4.0 (with the latest interim patches) in the new server 11.31 blade.

Question is

1. When our source is in 10.1.0.2.0 & target is in 10.2.0.4.0, if we do a homogenous system copy (back up & restore), will it work? or do we need to run an upgrade script? as the database is upgraded?

2. Or do we need to upgrade our source first to 10.2.0.4.0 and then perform a homogenous system copy? This will need double downtime.

3. Can we just copy all the oracle/sap binaries from 11.23 to 11.31 ( keep the same hostname) from source to target, after the copy shutdown the source and start the target 11.31/oracle 10.1.0.2.0 and later upgrade to oracle 10.2.0.4 ? will this method work?

Would appreciate your experience in this regards

Thanks

Hi,

Lets see this as a (kind of) OS/DB migration scenario, where both your OS and Oracle are undergoing a change. The best approach would be to use Homogeneous System Copy, but R3Load based, instead of backup/restore.

Advantages of this approach (Assuming there is no codepage migration):

1.) The generated SAP Load will be compatible to any version of target OS/DB.

2.) You can use parallelism options of R3Load (Distribution Monitor) to actually reduce the runtime (or downtime).

3.) SAP-supported approach, so in case you into issues, excellent logging and tracing mechanisms in SAP standard tool can help you get over it.

4.) No downtime on source system, except for taking the paralleled R3Load export. But this can be tuned to a reasonable duration.

5.) No conflicting issues with DB metadata or kernel versions in target system.

Thanks,

Kundan..

1. As per the 14th question of the [SAP Note 592393 - FAQ: Oracle|https://websmp130.sap-ag.de/sap(bD1lbiZjPTAwMQ==)/bc/bsp/spn/sapnotes/index2.htm?numm=592393], and the section Switch to a newer patch set of the same release:After the system copy, you have to carry out all of the steps that have to be carried out when you install the patch set.Several points can also be connected (for example, a change from 8.0.6 (32-bit) to 8.1.7 (64-bit). The only essential step is that postprocessing is carried out fully

2. I guess this is not required and you can go ahead with the system copy and then do the post patch installation steps.

3. Instead of doing this, u can better download the patch 10.2.0.2.0 from the service market place under database patches and then update the patch set 10.2.0.4.0 after the system copy.

Hope this helps.

Yes , you need to run upgrade script before opening the DB.

Or do we need to upgrade our source first to 10.2.0.4.0 and then perform a homogenous system copy? This will need double downtime.

This is also a option but as you mentioned , need double downtime

Can we just copy all the oracle/sap binaries from 11.23 to 11.31 ( keep the same hostname) from source to target, after the copy shutdown the source and start the target 11.31/oracle 10.1.0.2.0 and later upgrade to oracle 10.2.0.4 ? will this method work?

This i am not sure , may or may not work ...Suggestion is not go for this or test well before proceeding with this option.
