BRARCHIVE options to save/del

Former Member

Hey guys,

I would like to schedule a brarchive run to take 2 copies of the archvie logs and delete them. I noticed however the tool has a few options to do this, and I still cannot determine what the differences (or bennefits) of either of these are:

-SCD (second copy delete)

-SSD (double save and delete)

-SDS (second copy delete save).

Is there any difference in these parameters? what is the difference between copy and save (I assume both just get copied or saved to the netbackup/storage device?

Thanks guys

Richard

Hi,

- SCD: Saves all archives that have alreadybeen backed up once for a second time and delete if second save is ok

- SSD: Save one redo to two devices at the same time and delete if both saves succesfull

- CDS: combo of -SCD plus -S , so do as -SCD and than do the first save of not yet backed up logs to the same device

-scd requires a -s run to take place before

See this table what will be saved to what tapes:

Log -s / -scd | -ssd | -cds
     TAP1 TAP2 | TAP1 TAP2 | TAP1 TAP2
10 X | X X | X
11 X | X X | X
12 X | X X | X
13 X | X X | X
14 X | X X | X
15 X | X X | X
16 X | X X | X
17 X | X X | X
18 X | X X | X
19 X | X X | X

Start run 1 (-s/-ssd/-cds) here for Logs 10..19: Log being saved to the tape with X

System continues to write Log 20..29

     TAP1 TAP2 | TAP1 TAP2 | TAP1 TAP2
10 X Y | X X | X Y

12 X Y | X X | X Y
13 X Y | X X | X Y
14 X Y | X X | X Y
15 X Y | X X | X Y

22 | Y Y | Y
23 | Y Y | Y
24 | Y Y | Y
25 | Y Y | Y
26 | Y Y | Y
27 | Y Y | Y
28 | Y Y | Y
29 | Y Y | Y

Start run 2 (-scd/-ssd/-cds) here for Logs 10..29: Logs being saved to the tape with Y

Well, it really depends...

Do you have only a single tape attached to the SAP system or do you have a 3rd party tool for backup.

Do you have legal requirements for how much loss of work you can afford in case of a desaster crash

like a fire in your datacenter?

This would affect how often and how many arch-backups need to be done during the day.

The most simple solution to a single tape is a DB backup with an append run of brarchive with -cds.

Requires one tape a day and has everything on a single tape but gives you 24 hours risk for

desaster, when you do daily backups.
