do you perhaps know where I can find some documentation regarding this problem? The error is "Cannot connect to message server" (rc=9)

Hi Wynand,

first I would try to connect directly to the central instance, not useing logon balancing. Create a new SAPGUI entry, enter the server name, system number and SID and try to connect.

If that works, take a look at the services file on the client, if the message service is entered there.

Also check if that guy did install MSN messenger 7.0 or 7.5 on his PC...

Pascal

Seriously, check to see if you have MSN Messenger 7.0 or 7.5 installed.

The reason for this Logon balancing error 88 is, that the datatype of the registry value

HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\TCPIP\Parameters\DatabasePath

is changed from REG_EXPAND_SZ to REG_SZ.

I resolved mine Friday by doing the following:

Start the registry editor and rename the registry value

HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\TCPIP\Parameters\DatabasePath

(change it to DatabasePath1 or something similar so you don't lose it)

Create an EXPANDABLE-String Value (REG_EXPAND_SZ) with the same name and value. (should be - %SystemRoot%\system32\drivers\etc)

That worked for my situation. Hope it helps yours. Give points if so please.

I am having the same problem, and this still didn't resolve it. I have MSN 8.1. When I looked at the registry, the DatabasePath was already REG_EXPAND_SZ, not REG_SZ, so I don't think that is the problem. Do you have any other ideas?

Try this:

Go to: C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\services

Open services file with Notepad and write

sapmsBWQ 3600/tcp

This should be the first line where SAPMS starts. If it is DEV server, write:

sapmsBWD 3600/tcp.

It solved my problem.

Hi Michael ,

I also encountered this same error.

But when i went to this path in regedit :

HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\TCPIP\Parameters\

I got :

Parameters

-> Adapters

-> DNSRegisteredAdapters

-> Interfaces

Which is the DatabasePath you were trying to mention to change the REG_SZ

and yes there are many REG_SZ but no REG_EXPAND_SZ values...

Please do revert ASAP !!

Dear Wyland ,

First you have to check . after login you have to check message server & Dispatcher server. if SAP GUI is not connected to message server then it may be network Problem , firwell setting and in MMC Microsoft Managment Console you have to check . how much dialog Process is running .

I've gotten this error on a number of machines in our enterprise. Usually, in my case, the TCP port for that entry is not defined in the SERVICES file on the local machine. For example: sapmsPRD 3603/tcp

Hope this helps...

Hi Everyone ,

I happened to correct my problem after some efforts .

Steps to resolve the SAP Logon Balancing Error 88 :

1. Run -> Type in C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\services

2. Now check whether the Services file opened with Notepad has all the

contents in the attached Services file ( Checking the Services file of

someone whose already using in your Company ).

3. If not then copy those missing contents.

How do I determine what is the correct port to use in the services file?

I have checked my registry, and the values were already as required, so I am looking at what needs to be done in the services file in order to get this to work.

I have no sapms entries in the file at all, so I added the following line at then end of the file:

sapmsMBD 3900/tcp

If I look at the system configuration in portal, then the server port that is entered there is sapmsMBD.

If I check under the Support tool in portal, then, under the message server properties, I see that the port mentioned there is 3900.

The system number for MBD is 01, so not sure if that impacts on things.

If I don't have the entry in my services file, then I get the Logon Balancing ... error.

Once I have made the changes in the services file, I get a new error, which is

Error in logon balancing routine (rc=82, err-7(:

Logon group 'PUBLIC' not found - check spelling and case sensitivity

Now, if I go to transaction SMLG, I can confirm that logon group PUBLIC exists.

Any ideas?

Cheers,

Andrew

Hello,

If the system number of your MBD system is 01 then your entry in the services file should be

sapmsMBD 3601/tcp

You can check the system number with transaction SMMS.

Under Server Name, you shoud see something like hostname_MBD_xx

xx is your system number.

If you click on the "display" button (CtrlShiftF10), you will see the message server trace file and find a line like this :

[Thr 12032] *** I listen to port sapmsMBD (3601) ***

Hi Wynand,

this error means that sapgui could not connect to the message server, which could have lots of reasons, for example network problems, system not running, wrong client settings (firewall...)...
