Hi all,
We are planning an unicode conversion of our ECC6 systems based on windows 2003 X64 and SQL 2005.
We will use the "Two server method" so the import will be done on a new server.
My question is :
before we start the import on the new server, do we need to install an unicode sap system (CI + DBI or just CI) from scratch on this new server or the system copy target step will do the install of the CI+DBI ?
Thanks for your clarifications

Hi,
The system copy option in the SAPINST needs to be used , it will give you the option to install the SAP .
Basically it works in the same way as your new installation , it has been customized to provide you with the system copy senario(s) for the DB . Export dump will be used instead of the export CD's (which you use during new install) , but you still have to get kernel DVD , etc.

Hi Daniel,
there are basically 3 SAP tasks of a Basis Admin, which are based on the same tools (SAPInst / R3Load):
1) New Installation
2) OS/DB migration
3) Unicode conversion
In all procedures, the system is exported to a database independent format, then a new system is installed using the export files created before. For case 1), the export files (of an "empty system") are provided by SAP on the installation DVDs - therefore you only have to do the import. In cases 2) and 3), you have to export an existing system and create a copy of this system on a different technology (Unicode and/or different OS/DB).

Thanks for your responses.
So if I have understood correctly, I don't need to install an emptied ECC6 system with the same SID than my source system before I start the homegeneous system copy target import.
When I will select "Software Life-Cycle Options --> System Copy --> <database> --> Target System" from sapinst, the CI+DBI instance will be installed.
And so as i have seen in the SCP System Conversion Guide guide and System Copy guide, the execution of the import target can be started in advance than the export as it will wait for the export files when we use the parallelization of the export/import
Right ?
Thanks for your replies

Hi Daniel,
Definitely its under ... Software Life-Cycle Options --> System Copy -->
after that you would have to select the database , *target system * , central system (i suppose you are having CI+DB on the same server) , i don't exactly recall the sequence . But i am sure you would be easily able to figure it out its not difficult .
Coming to the second part of your query .... When you talk about parallel export /import i suppose you are basically refer to Migration Monitor . In that case yes you have to start the target install in advance.
Download the Migmon.SAR file from the SMP , it has got all the related files and also documentation regarding its usage and options.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply.
I have one more question:
In the SCP Conversion Unicode guide, it is specified to update the the latest kernel patch and also R3load, R3ldctl and R3szchk.
Even if we download the last Master DVD available and the Kernel DVD from the marketplace can we manually replace in the extracted directory those files by the last one's available ?
Can we also replace the different SAR files of the system copy java tools (migration minitor...) ?

Daniel

Yes it is always recommended to use the latest R3load, R3ldctl and R3szchk . By doing so you can avoid lot of errors.
R3ldctl and R3szchk is only used at the source system , R3load on both source and target.
I didn't understand what you meant by Can we also replace the different SAR files of the system copy java tools (migration minitor...) ?

Hi Neel,
Ok, so we can replace R3load, R3ldctl and R3szchk that are stored in the master DVD by the latest one's available.
For my other question, can we also replace the Migration Monitor SAR file and the other system copy tools that are stored also on the Master DVD by the latest available ?
Other Point, with Distribution Monitor we can run R3load processes on multiple machines in parallel for the export/import.
Is Distribution Monitor integrated into SAPINST ?
If not, in the new target system, shall we install an emptied SAP system before using DM ?
Thanks for your reply
Daniel

I would replace R3load, R3ldctl and R3szchk from the kernel directory before export/import step .
No you don't have to replace migration monitor . In the above post when i refered to Migration Monitor i meant migration monitor with manual start, in that case download the latest from the SMP
No distribution monitor is not integrated. I would advice if you are not familiar with Migration Monitor don't even think of Distribution Monitor, unless you have a very large system.
