Hello

I am not an Oracle specialist but I can handle Oracle intsalation following the instalation guide.I also manage several ECC/netweaver system on oracle/Linux.

I wander here is what is the sequence if an system needs to be installed (in this case I have in mind installation as part of miigration) on Oracle RAC.

What if the operating system has to be LInux? Is it needed to be installed a cluster before installling RAC

I am trying to find clear descripton but I can not find it. Please help(also where to find istallation guide for ECC5 and media). As we have ECC5 on Alpha servers we need to perform migration to linux first

You won't find a simple step list for migrations like these, there are too many variables to consider.

Source: ECC5 (NW2004) with oracle 10g on alpha

Destination: ECC5 with oracle 10g RAC on linux

Important factors are:

- how large is the database?

- how is your availability of the prod system? can you for example get a system downtime of 3three days?

First of all, you will definitely need a certified consultant migration from alpha to linux. This guy will know how to attack the problem. Personally as you will obviously get new hardware for the new system, I would install the new system with RAC and then do the migration directly into the new RAC environment. Bevor the live migration i would drive half a dozen test runs to test and optimize the procedure.

So my sequence would be something like this (first sandbox, then on dev, qas and finally the prod system):

- do a dummy export of the database

- install crs

- install the new system with the dummy export (new system with HA setup -> ASCS)

- transform single instance into RAC instance

- install other nodes

- test of the installation, backup/restore, failover...

- do the real migration (export/import)

Cheers Michael
