Build Development instance from Production (system copy)

Hi There,

The business is in the process of moving their development systems hosted at a remote site and relocate to their data centre . The approach being considered is to rebuild development system from production (system copy) and apply missing transports.

Please share your experiences on this approach and any SAP notes or documentation is available on this strategy.

Hi,

Normally, the system copy will be done from production to Quality systems. Anyhow I would like you to consider below points before proceeding further.

1) Is your production and development system at the same patch level and also your development(ABAP) and configuration level are same in both the systems. No need to worry about the data level. If yes then in that case it can be done.

2) Suppose if your development system is in a patch level higher than production or say if there are any new developments (ABAP) or configuration done in development which are not yet moved to quality or production and if there are any open transport which are not released yet then in that case if you do a system copy from production you will be losing all that.

3) Also, do you have any quality system in between development and production. If so, then above mentioned points need to be considered for quality system point also.

Quite informative, We maintain strict change control and are at same patch level across R/3 landscape. We are engaging developers to identify transports that will need to be closed or kept track / reopened when development system is rebuilt from production.
