Integrating MDM 7.1 and BPM without Composite Environment 7.1 or 7.2

Hello experts,

We are looking to integrate MDM and BPM together. MDM needs Enterprise Portal and BPM needs CE 7.1 or 7.2. Since we can build applications using Visual Composer on Enterprise Portal plus any Webdynpro applications ABAP or Java, do we really need to integrate Composite Environment for BMP as well?

Your response of expertise is greatly appreciated.

Hi,

BPM is a component of the CE server. You can't run it separately. So you need a CE server to run your business processes using BPM engine.

As far as integration between MDM and CE/BPM goes, you will have to use the CE server to run your data management workflows. For MDM 7.1 and CE 7.2, you'll use Web Dynpro JAVA based UI components. These have to be deployed on the CE server. If you wanted to, you can publish the UWL items to Central Portal as a link but the actual MDM process will run on CE server.

Thank you very much for your quick response. We are already planning to install Enterprise Portal for MDM 7.1. So if we already have EP, we shouldn't need to install the CE because EP has more capabilities than CE. I can build composite applications on a full blown Enterprise Portal using either NWDS or Visual Composer. Right?

You are welcome.

You can use the Portal to run composite applications but then you won't be able to use the business process management engine for master data management. Depending upon how you want to manage your data, Portal based implementation might be enough for you. But if you wanted to use the latest functionality available by SAP for CE/BPM based MDM, you'll have to install CE at a later point.

As far as NWDS is concerned, you'll have to use NWDS anyway even if you were using CE since you need to carry our Web Dynpro JAVA development as well as design your data maangement workflow using BPM.

Did you look at /people/markus.ganser/blog/2010/05/10/mdm-quick-starter-collaborative-master-data-creation-processes for an idea of what BPM based implementation could offer?
