We will have a mixed XP SP3 and Windows 7 desktop environment for awhile. What if anything can be impacted if the Environment Variable SAPLOGON_INI_FILE is not set?
Dan -
From our experience, (mix of 2000, XP, Vista & 7) the location of the INI may not be consistent w/o that variable set. This could lead to a management nightmare for a helpdesk or for support purposes.
If memory serves, the default location for XP is under C:\Document and Settings\<username>\Application Data\SAP\Common.
Under Windows 7 the location of the INI is: C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\SAP\Common
This could be cumbersome when attempting to diagnose a problem and have different locations for files.
We currently use the SAP_LOGON_INI variable and point the INI to C:\Program Files\SAP for consistency and 1 location for all environments. Hope this helps.

Zecher
