I think what you will find is that MII functionality is independent of the ERP version. However, there are substantial differences between ERP versions. A few that come to mind for your specific case. You do not have the same connectors available in the early case. You will also find that the BAPI's available in the earlier version is a much smaller pool. Process Order bapis, for example, are not present since they did not appear until ECC 5.5 (I believe).
IDoc/RFC Listeners are not so different except that the configuration does not follow the same paths as in the later versions. That is something you will have to investigate with a knowledgeable Basis person.
Templates built and downloadable from SDN may need some tweaks depending upon which BAPI is invoked and what differences have occurred over the time frame between the two versions.
