JCo and Language Variations

We are trying to use the latest Java Connector to send requests from a non-SAP java application into an SAP system using various Japanese langauge constructs, such as full-width Katakana and half-width Katakana. The SAP system is fully enabled to handle these as the JA language is installed and it has been used with these language variations via the SAP GUI. However, when I send anything in via the JCo other than full-width Katakana, the characters are corrupted somewhere along the line and I end up with #'s and ?'s in SAP. This usually indicates a code page problem, but I beleive full- and half-width Katakana are in the same code page, so I am not sure that is a problem. Has anyone run into this situation, and, if so, what did you do to fix it?

Youz really expect help on this on SDN? I guess this is specific enough to put it into OSS.
