Storgae location in material master and storage loc det in sales order

Hello,

In material master, It is mandatory to maintain storage locatiion from inventory management point of viw. i.e we we mantain storage location 0001 for finished Material A in material master, it means that material will be stored in storage location 0001.

My question is when storage location is there in material master, why in SAP, there is a determination rule to determine storage location in sales order (ship pointplantsorage conditions). The storage location 0001 can be simply copied to sales order for material A.

If Iam missing something, pls explain by means of an example.

2 scenarios here Inbound and Outbound.

When you are creating SO and subsequently delivery, you need to have picking strategy if you are managing the goods at your location.

Sloc in material maste doesnt have much impact on picking. Piking in delivery depends on below strategy.

MALA: The picking location is determined based on the shipping point, the delivering plant, and the storage condition for the material as defined in the material master.

RETA and MARE: These rules are mainly used in trade scenarios.

You can also use the customer exit in SAP enhancement V02V0002 to implement storage location determination.

The picking location search is activated for each delivery item category

I agree to what Vijay Says.

Adding to that, say in the day to day scenario, a materail goes thro' different storage locations for different processing before it becomes a finished goods ready for sales and disriubtion. May be all those SLs are not important from SD point of view but it becomes important from IM, PP and WM point of view. Hence, if the material has to be stored in different storage locations, then, they have to be created in different storage locations of the plant in SAP as well. Now, how will SAP know which storage location to pick up when you create a sales order or a delivery. There should be a determination procedure for the same. Hence, SAP has given this rule of storage location determination.

If storage location for picking is not specified in the order item, the system determines the storage location when it creates the outbound delivery and copies it into the delivery item. Otherwise, the storage location entered in the order item is used in the outbound delivery.

The system determines the picking location based on a rule defined in the delivery type. The following rules are shipped in the standard system:

Hi,

If the material is stored in more than one storage location we need a determination process to find out which one should come by default in your sales document.

Even if it is maintained in one storage location, we need to give the default storage location.

Thanks for the reply. But what if we do not maintain a storage location in material master. For example, while receiving finished goods from production floor, we can give storage location while doing goods receipt. So why we need to maintain storage location in material master ?

In MRP2 view, you have two storage locations; one for external procurement (Field LGFSB) of that component which would be proposed in the planned order

The next one is for issue to production if that material is a component and if the material is produced in house, then this storage location (Field LGPRO) would be receiving storage location.
