Why do you want to minimise the no.of datafiles and reorg the entire database ?

If there aren't any problems, it will not be worth the effort.

And I have seen databases with even more datafiles, running smoothly.

And by the way, there may be size limits for files in your operating system. You didn't tell us which.

A reorg may or may not help in reducing the current database size.

You will know afterwards. It will be not easy to tell in advance.

File size limit is unlimited.

default:

fsize = -1

core = -1

cpu = -1

data = -1

rss = -1

stack = -1

stack_hard = -1

nofiles = 4000

  1. ulimit

unlimited

I would like to know the maximum no.of datafiles in one tablespace

The answer is in SAP Note 606395 - FAQ: Oracle Limitations

Database files

maximum per tablespace : on most operating systems 1022

maximum per database : 65533 total, further limited by the

db_files init<SID>.ora parameter

And please don't ask now: What is the exact limit for my operating system? (You didn't tell us, by the way.)

Try Google or SDN search instead!

hope this helps
