Archiving old unsettled Sales orders

Hi Experts

I need to get rid of thousands of old unwanted sales orders giving settlement (VA88) errors. I know that I can change the settlement profile to 'not to be settled' and then programatically set the sales order statuses to CLSD and then archive.

Has anyone done something like this or can offer a better solution please?
