Brbackup : Rewinding of tape failed on Windows 2003 & 2008 VM.

Hi,

We have 4 VM on BL860 server (HP-UX), 2 guests of OS HP-UX and another 2 on windows 2003 & 2008 respectively. We use brbackup for online consistent backup on all guests. The MSL tape library is connected to BLADE through brocade switch.

The backup of HP-UX guests finished successfully but backup of windows guests terminated with error while rewinding of the tape.

I checked Note 104719 NT: Problems with MT.EXE (BRBackup error: mt: ...) but unable to resolve the issue.

Please suggest the solution.

Below is the error for your reference.

Hi

request could not be performed because of an I/O device error

its due to Tape Library issue ...

Kindly Restart the Tape Libarary and try to take backup

it should work .

Hi ,

To perform this activity (command) below, make sure that the tape has been moved into the drive. Also make a note that this activity is not to be performed repetitively only when you come across any backup failures or suspect that Tape Drives arenu2019t working appropriately.

Go in the link shown below and verify the availability of tapes in the drive

We are testing with a single tape above 30L3 in drive 1 (rmt0)

Also keep the distinction in mind that

Drive 1 -> rmt0

Drive 2 -> rmt1

Now check these two tape drives are accessible from your AIX server below

rmt0 & rmt1 are accessible above

Since the tape has already been put into drive 1(rmt0) we would check its operation with the command shown below

tctl -f /dev/rmt0 rewind

The command executes successfully above, had it not been successful it would have shown the error as shown below

If you get an error above, (at this point you have tape available in your tape drive) All what you have to do is to:

First Restart the Tape Library and secondly execute the command cfgmgr

After restarting the Tape Library execute cfgmgr command as shown below

This would reconfigure the tape drives on your AIX servers.

And then when you would test with the same command

tctl -f /dev/rmt0 rewind

Now itu2019s executed successfully above this shows that Tape in the tape drive is accessible

Thanks for your suggestions.

I already tried after rebooting the library & server but the problem is not resolved.

Please note that I am getting I/O error while rewinding of the tape after copying all data file & logs to the tape.

Also, I am getting this error on Windows OS gusets and HP-UX guest working fine on the same box.

The error is related to ASPI manager but I dont know how to overcome on it.

Regards,

Rajesh
