the sm workcenter are slow. Is there a way to make it a little bit faster?

Do you have a oracle database ? If yes, please, follow my recommendation of oracle database. Usually the customers didn't perform the oracle tunning.

And remember, just by the work centers' very nature as an overlay to the GUI, they will be slower than the GUI itself.

If you have a Oracle database, there's a big possibility to have missing parameters in your database.
