SAP Note 835704 helped me (some). It should have provided more details in step one of the solution.
Because the install was so close to finishing, I was able to use sapmmc to view everything. Whenever I tried restarting my j2ee server, the server0 would never start. I used the ConfigTool for server0 (located at C:\usr\sap\J2E\JC00\j2ee\configtool) to view the JVM startup settings. I modified xmx and xms from 1024 to 512. I shutdown my SAP server, restarted my PC, didn't launch anything but sapmmc, started up my SAP server and lo and behold the server0 finally started. Not sure what issues I'll face now, but at least it started.
Step 2 of the solution on SAP Note 835704 references SAP Note 129813 about using an Address Space Viewer tool to figure out what DLLs are having trouble and rebasing it. It also references SAP Note 853696 (which I think applies to me). Wish me luck!

I restarted the installation and now the C:\Program Files\sapinst_instdir\NW04S\SYSTEM\DEVWP\MAXDB\sapinst.log ends with:

SAPSTART finished successfully on crp19416_J2E_00, but at least one process doesn't run correctly:
C:\usr\sap\J2E\SYS\exe\uc\NTI386\sapstart.exe=>sapparam(1c): No Profile used.
This is all happening in phase 39 of 40 of the installation process labeled "Prepare to install minimal configuration". My SAPSID is J2E My JAVA_HOME is jdk 1.4.2_19 and my profiles in C:\usr\sap\J2E\SYS\profile all look okay. I appreciate any suggestions to get through this installation process.
