SMD impact on system refreshes

Hi,

We have a mixture of ECC 6.0 ABAP-only and NW 7.0 dual stack systems. Consultants are requesting the SMD be installed and configured. We frequently refresh QA and sandbox systems.

1. Based on a variety of documents, it appears that SMD agents would need to be installed on all ABAP and dual stack systems, Wily Introscope manager on Solution Manager, and Wily Introscope agents on all dual stack systems. Does that sound right?

2. What is the impact of SMD on system refreshes? At present we can refresh the ABAP - only systems with a simple RMAN database restore from the source system. Will SMD introduce JAVA to these systems, forcing the use of SAPINST imports?

3. Is any part of Wily Introscope stored in the database? Will the presence of Wily require changes to the refresh procedure of our dual stack systems?

TIA,

Russ

Hello Russ,

Yes. You must finish transaction solman_setup: initial, basic and managed system configuration. These steps will guide you to correctly configure E2E Diagnostics for your managed systems.

2. What is the impact of SMD on system refreshes? At present we can refresh the ABAP - only systems with a simple RMAN database restore from the source system. Will SMD introduce JAVA to these systems, forcing the use of SAPINST imports?

If I understood correctly, you want to monitor the Java stack too using Introscope Agent, which is deployed with the SDM. The SMD Agent + Introscope Agent is the best scenario, as the first facilitates the second. All this information is included in the Managed System Configuration in solman_setup. Remeber: do it in sequence and do not skip any step!

3. Is any part of Wily Introscope stored in the database? Will the presence of Wily require changes to the refresh procedure of our dual stack systems?

Wily Introscope EM has it's own database, so it will not interfere with your current database. Regarding the refresh, it won't be an issue. Please remember to correctly setup the Introscope Agent, as it may stop Java VM to start if the parameters are not right. Again, all this procedures are contained in the solman_setup.
