Oracle Installation on windows 2008

I have a question regarding installation of ORACLE DB on windows 2008 x64 OS.

We have got following dvd's as shipment from SAP for oracle DB.

Here are the labels

1. ORACLE 10.2 RDBMS Windows Server on IA32 32bit Windows Server on IA64 64bit Windows Server on x64 64bit

Number 51031678

2. ORACLE 10.2.0.4 Oracle Failsafe Server 3.4.1.5 for Windows Server 2008 on x64 64bit

Number 51036975

Now as the first DVD was giving error for not being supported on the platform , we installed the DB from 2nd DVD for DEV and QAS box,.

Is that fine ? or are there any differences.

Please advice

So you didn't install the database but only failsafe.

Did you check for notes? In your example I'd e. g. fire up a browser to http://service.sap.com/notes and enter

"oracle windows 2008"

pretty much at the top of the list there's a note

Note 1303262 - Oracle on Windows Server 2008

which tells you which DVD you need to install Oracle 10.2.0.4 on Windows 2008.

And do not execute setup.exe but use the provided script sapserver.cmd.

- Uninstall failsafe

- reboot the machine

- install Oracle as described in the installation guide

As per the note

"You have to install the Oracle Version 10.2.0.4.0. It is currently available on on the SMP download area on the DVD with part number 51036975. "

and

"On MSCS, you need the Oracle Failsafe Server 3.4.1.5 and Oracle Failsafe Client 3.4.1 (32 Bit). Both are currently available on the DVD with part number 51037577."

I have used the DVD part number 51036975 for the installation however in the service marketplace this DVD description says

51036975 ORACLE 10.2.0.4 Failsafe Server 3.4.1.5 Windows 2008

From your initial query, I've inferred that you have installed 10.2.0.4.0 from the second DVD.

For Windows server 2008, oracle 10.2.0.4.0 has to be installed directly. In this version of OS, installing oracle 10.2.0.1.0 and then patching it to 10.2.0.4.0 is not possible. So, whatever you have done is correct.

In case if you are going for MSCS cluster, then you will need Failsafe software(available in the same DVD) to be installed.

BTW: I hope you would have executed startsrv.cmd to install Oracle DB SW as insisted by Markus.
