Hi Renu,
Messaging system will take about processing your messages and storing,PI uses Queue mechanism it is more or equilent to JMS messaging process...
to get more info refer below link

Coming to patterns,If you have asome idea about Integrayion Pattersn in EAI ,same will aplicable to PI also..
Two ways we can define patters
1)While developing Middleare product we can follow EAI patterns.
2)PI point of view Best practices and design satndatds also we call patterns..the patter will talk about Integration style, trasformation and routing too.. it is my understanding.

Raj

Messaging System in SAP PI
SAP XI/ PI itself is a Messaging System!
Messgaing system means the one which can process messages (send/ receive/ transform)......and XI/ PI does it.
JDBC/ SOAP/ RFC etc protocols, BPM are a part of the XI Messaging system.
Enterprise Integration patterns in SAP PI world
The scenarios that you develop in XI/ PI can be termed as Integration Patterns..... some graphical examples would be the BPM scenarios developed under this namespace http://sap.com/xi/XI/System/Patterns
May be google will provide you with more information.....both of the above terms (Messaging System and Enterprise Integration Patterns are generic terms and not specific for XI/ PI)
Regards,
Abhishek.
